Autumn: Now that the season of mists and mellow fruitfulness is here its time to get those layers on! You can always take off a layer if the autumn sun warms you up!
What has always worked for me and my kids is this:
Adults: warm layers of long sleeved top and trousers, with jumper and warm socks if needed. You can always add a thermal best and tights under your trousers if its extra chilly. Pop on waterproof top and trousers, and wellies or boots and you're ready. A hat and gloves in your bag is handy too. If you find wellies cold, try a fleece sock liner, fleecy insoles or try the neoprene wellies, or walking boots with thick socks.
Kids: thick trousers and long sleeved tshirt or thermal top, jumper and thick socks. Add tights under their trousers and an extra top/ tshirt if chilly. You can always get blue tights for boys! Waterproof top and bottoms work well and allow them to play pouring without getting chilly! Alternatively an all in one padded waterproof suit from little Trekkers, muddy puddles or jojomamambebe or ebay are good. We always use waterproofs over a fleece all in one ( little Trekkers etc again) ( over their clothes). It means they can use their waterproofs all year round without getting too hot, and the fleece suit is useful on its own for camping or chilly days! Add a hat and gloves too on chilly days. Make sure their wellies are big enough to incorporate their thicker socks and tights combo. They need an air gap around their feet to allow the warm air to insulate them.
If you are well wrapped up playing outside in autumn / winter is a joy, and you both get all the health and relaxation benefits of being outside without feeling miserable!
If it is cold, we will keep moving and playing games to keep warm, and have plenty of hot drinks available.
